Native Irish wolves (Canis lupus) were apex predators that lived in Ireland for thousands of years, with the country once known as “Wolf Land”.

They held a significant place in Irish mythology and culture (often called mactíre) before being hunted to extinction, with the last wolf in Ireland believed to have been killed in 1786 on the slopes of Mount Leinster near Ballydarton in County Carlow.

The wolf was hunted down and killed by a pack of wolfhounds, led by John Watson, Master of the Tullow Hunt, after it was blamed for killing sheep in the area.

The candle is produced by our native black honeybees, which are on the verge of extension.
